Seeing Jesus in the Historical Books

Jesus taught us to pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10) But what kind of king and what kind of kingdom are we asking for?

“We have to understand what it means that Jesus taught his disciples to pray for the kingdom to come,” Nancy Guthrie explains her new book, The Son of David. “And the best way to understand the kingdom and the king is to begin in the historical books of the Old Testament, which create for us a context in which we can better understand the kingdom of God as it once was, what it is now, and what it will one day be.”

Guthrie, a seasoned Bible teacher and author, provides readers with a ten week guided study of the Old Testament Historical Books. Incorporating relevant teaching and group discussion, the study traces the history of the people of God from the time they entered the Promised Land through a series of failed kings, exile, and finally their return to await the true King. Readers will learn to see Jesus in relationship to these historical books: as the greater Joshua who leads his people into rest, the greater Boaz who has done all that is necessary to redeem, the greater King who will sit on David’s throne forever, and the greater Restorer who is building his church from ruined stones.
